According to PM Modi, in the coming five years, the country will be equipped with 1 lakh semiconductor design engineers

There are around 8,000 fresh employment positions available in India’s semiconductor industry across various profiles, according to a media report by Moneycontrol. The report also added that although the country’s chip ecosystem is still in the early stages of development, there are approximately 60-80 percent of new positions available in the entry-level category.

These new positions will be spearheaded by freshers whose expertise in this industry is quite new and the various roles in these positions include production engineer, junior engineer, or semiconductor technician. Most importantly, 15-20 percent of the employment caters to the mid-level segment and the roles are quality control specialists, process engineers, or semiconductor design engineers.

During the second edition of SemiconIndia 2023 event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that India is turning into an attractive destination for global semiconductor manufacturing and therefore, the government has selected more than 300 colleges where specific course in semiconductor will be available and in the coming five years, the country will be equipped with 1 lakh semiconductor design engineers.

Then, 10-20 percent of employment roles are of senior-levels, which includes roles such as managerial positions, research scientists, and senior design architect. Jaideep Kewalramani, Head of Employability Business and COO, TeamLease EdTech told Moneycontrol exclusively, "As a sunrise industry, the demand for semiconductor professionals has surged significantly. While specific data may vary across companies and sub-sectors, a conservative estimate suggests a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of around 100 percent in open positions over the last three years."

Industry body India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) believes that the current talent or the skilled workforce volume in this industry is a matter of concern. Although various efforts are being made by the government and the industry to boost the growth of proficient workforces via numerous educational programs and industry initiatives, it is yet to meet the demand. And in the coming six months, IESA predicts an escalation of 15-20 percent demand for semiconductor skilled workforce.
